Synopsis
Hours after his release from prison, Jesus Quintana pairs up with fellow misfits Petey and Marie for a freewheeling joyride of petty crime and romance.

John Turturro has been in a handful of Coen brothers movies so I’m assuming they are friends.
I also assume that John would have to get permission from Joel and Ethan to use the character they created in this film.
Further, I imagine that after the film was finished, it must have been screened for the brothers.
What happens after the credits roll, when you realize your friend took your character and made the worst piece of dogshit movie you’ve ever seen?
I can’t imagine they are friends anymore.

A remake of a controversial 1974 French comedy that also doubles as a feature-length spin-off for a character who appeared in two scenes of a Coen brothers movie 22 years ago, “The Jesus Rolls” is a picaresque curio about an accused pedophile named “The” Jesus Quintana — a cartoonish Puerto Rican man played by the film’s Italian-American writer-director — who gets out of jail, reunites with his best friend, and immediately embarks upon a sweet and breezy crime spree that’s fueled by stolen cars and borrowed women. In other words, virtually everything about John Turturro’s eccentric new movie feels like it belongs to another time.
That isn’t always a bad thing, of course. The freewheeling Jonathan Demme energy only grows…

2020 list - ClickHEREI did not expect this to be the massive quality dip that it was, but it ended up giving me one of my worst experiences of the year. I recently watched Lebowskito prepare myself for this creepy idea for a film. Jesus is a fine character, but he definitely wouldn’t be the one I’d want to see a spinoff from. Regardless, I knew it would not be Coen brother quality, but I had no clue that it would be the exact opposite. I like Turturro as an actor, but after seeing one of his few films; I can already tell I’m not a fan of him as a Director. It feels amateurish, thrown together, sloppy,…

Halfway through this I started saying "what is this French bullshit?" then as soon as the credits roll I see "based on some French bullshit." Wildly unnecessary and disrespectful. John Turturro please report to jail immediately.

This spin-off to Joel and Ethan Coen’s cult film The Big Lebowski is mostly uninspired and disappointingly humourless. It rapidly becomes clear that the Cohen brothers had no involvement of any kind with the film and Turturro’s bizarrely pointless repeating of his portrayal of the heavy Cuban American accented bowler Jesus Quintana, a secondary yet memorable character who was admittedly hilarious in the limited screentime the Coen’s allocated to him, just proves how much of a mistake the existence of this movie is by the end.
John Turturro writes, directs and stars in the movie, and it's clearly a passion project, and even though over two decades have expired, he flawlessly commandeers the mannerisms of the character. It's a shame…

Susan Sarandon is the only one here who shouldn't feel embarrassed.

Jesus...
Wept.
I've sort of been on a side mission to check out some of 2019's worst movie since the Razzies didn't provide an actual list of nominees so far. What's up with that shit? Anyway, it appears I'm doing okay finding fromage on my own. I don't think this one has enough traction to get Razzie attention, but boy does it deserve the recognition.
While that Keanu Reeve's flick Replicas was unsurprisingly shitty, I wasn't expecting something to knock that off my best of the worst podium so quickly, so congrats to John Turturro for plugging "The Jesus" into a remake of some forgotten road movie from the seventies. I didn't actually investigate what that film was. If it's…

This is a great example of the IP Trojan Horse where you do a sequel or legacy sequel and just make whatever else you wanted instead. In this case, French shit where people sit around naked and talk about their hundreds of sexual partners. It's 85 minutes that feels like 850. I guess there's at least a John Turturro / Susan Sarandon / Bobby Cannavale threeway but it also under delivers.
And don't worry, Coen brothers fans, John Turturro does repeat I think every single line he said in The Big Lebowski... which it also retcons in so far that the Jesus didn't intentionally expose himself and was simply railroaded by the American criminal justice system. Great!
Honestly, a giant missed opportunity to explore Jesus's portly short-haired mustachioed bowling partner from The Big Lebowski - Liam!
